farmer's market season

As summer rolls into Chicagoland a number of farmer's markets are opening up for the summer. One of the premier markets in Chicago, the Green City Market, is in my neighborhood and open year round. While we're lucky to have an indoor market on Saturdays throughout the year, each summer the market moves to an outdoor location in Lincoln Park and opens on Wednesday mornings in addition to Saturdays.

I'm on a mission to eat healthier (a contest w/my Mom pals takes credit for that!), and I love produce in the summer, so I decided that instead of hitting up Whole Foods or Trader Joes I should go down to the market and get some homegrown, local goodness.

Green City Market has a fantastic vibe. Vendors from Illinois, Wisconsin, & Michigan fill tents throughout the park, offering everything from cheeses and jams, to produce, to fresh cut flowers, to homemade Strawberry-Mint sodas. Ooh, and one vendor was selling the "world's best grilled cheese." I'm going to have to test it out next time! Tons of patrons stroll the booths. There are people walking their dogs, teenagers snacking on baked goods, and moms pushing strollers. Kids from local schools and camps get tutorials and lessons from the Green City staff. Cooking instruction from local restaurants & chefs are featured each day, and sometimes local musicians entertain the crowd. There's such a lovely atmosphere of embracing nature and educating the community about living & eating healthily. One vendor, Luiba from Flamin' Fury Nurseries, gave me a container of fresh cherries for free to sample. Sweet & juicy they are a perfect summer treat, and where else will you find a vendor that cares so much that they'll offer up freebies so you can learn to love their product?!? Along with the delicious cherries we acquired strawberries, apples, spinach, fresh flowers, local honey, and tomatoes. We stocked up!

It was such an idyllic day. We left early in the morning, walked a few miles, explored the market, played at a nearby playground, and went out to lunch. It was a perfect, sunshiny day. I foresee weekly trips to the market in our future!
